Eleanor Anderson: Color Block
Color Block exemplifies the intuitive processes and material explorations of Visiting Artist-in-Residence Eleanor Anderson, presenting recent fused glass panels and sculptures alongside her ongoing series of mixed-media textile tapestries. Rich with color, texture, and compositional nuance, Anderson’s works wander within and beyond disciplinary boundaries and various art historical styles, including the simple geometry, embodied experiences, and spatial concerns associated with the 1960s Minimalism movement. Each piece however reflects Anderson’s unique sense of play, attentiveness, and experimentation, as she explores each material’s vast potential for scale and application, while remaining attuned to both its intricate details and expansive presence. Gathering seemingly disparate objects and forms, such as glass beads, felt, and wooden toy blocks, Anderson responds to their disjointedness and fractures through acts of connection — sewing, knotting, fusing, or building with lattices and lines. Together, these works revere and challenge conventions of art-making, celebrating its often-overlooked spirit of play, joy, and unity to emphasize the need for such moments in our increasingly polarized world.True G.
